Early Childhood Education Fees and Allowances

Municipal Early Childhood Education Fees and Allowances

Municipal day care is chargeable. The fee depends on the hours of day care, the size of the family, and the family's income. The day care fee is calculated on the basis of the family's combined gross earnings. You can evaluate your day care fee based on your family's combined gross earnings and the hours of day care with a calculator. According to the Basic Education Act, preschool education is free, but preschoolers' day care is chargeable.

When parents have joint custody, the day care fee is determined by the resident parent's family size and income. This is also the case when the child lives alternately with both parents. If the child attends early childhood education only when s/he is staying with the non-resident parent, the fee can be determined by the non-resident parent's family size and income.

Private Early Childhood Education Fees and Allowances

Private day care can be run by service vouchers, private day care allowance or purchased ser-vice agreement. The day care fees are determined differently in each case. In service voucher day care centers, the fee cannot be more than 30 € larger than the fee in municipal day care. Day care centers, group family day care centers, and family day care providers that are run by the private day care allowance define the fee themselves. You can apply for the private day care allowance from Kela (The Social Insurance Institution of Finland). As regards day care acquired as a purchased service, the fee is the same as in municipal day care.
