Family Day Care
Family day care is intended for under school aged children and it takes place in small groups in a home-like, easygoing environment. Family day care takes place in the childminder's home, in the child's home or in a specially designed group family day care center. A private childminder needs to have a basic course or vocational qualification of a childminder, or some other qualification in education and care. The group can have permanently four under school aged children in full-time care, including the childminder's own under school aged children. Although, a preschool aged child or a school aged child can be placed in a group for the afternoon.
The private childminder's working time depends on the children's requested hours of day care. Usually the working hours vary from 8 to 9 hours a day. The hours of day care are agreed be-fore the child attends day care. The day care fees are similar to the fees in day care centers. You can apply to family day care with a day care application.
There are both private and municipal family day care providers in Vantaa. For more information on the family day care providers, contact your district's director of day care center.
Private Family Day Care
Private family day care is supervised by the local authorities. Family day care takes place in a home-like environment at the private childminder's home. Private childminder works as a private entrepreneur. A supervisor visits the private childminder's home and evaluates her/his suitability and her/his home's suitability for private family day care.
The city of Vantaa has written a handbook for private family day care, that includes instructions for arranging private family day care.
The childminder makes a written child care agreement with the family. The agreement includes, for instance, the days of care, the hours of care, the day care fee, summer vacation salary, and possible refund for the days of absence. If you are applying for municipal day care, it is advisable to mention it to the private childminder. During the private childminder's day of absence (due to e.g. sickness, child's sickness or other reasons) it is the parents' responsibility to arrange alternate care.
Each private childminder sets their own day care fee. The family can apply for statutory private day care allowance and municipal allowance from Kela (The Social Insurance Institution of Finland) which pays it directly to the childminder. The remaining part of the day care fee is left for the family to pay.
Private family day care providers are situated in different districts in Vantaa. For more infor-mation on the private family day care providers, contact your district's director of day care center. The directors of day care centers supervise the private family day care activity.
Would you like to become a private family day care provider?
As a private childminder, you take care of children in your own home or in the children's homes. With children, workdays are never dull and dreary. Private childminder's job suits in many life situations. Many people start the job while they are home with their own children.
A suitable degree and experience in child care and education are advisable. Additionally, the premises need to be safe and suitable for playing, sleeping, and serving food. You will not be working alone. The city supervises private family day care providers and you can meet with other childminders daily at playgrounds. As a private childminder, you can choose the children and set the day care fee by yourself. You can have a group of four under school aged children at a time, including your own under school aged children. Additionally, you can take one pre-schooler or school aged child into the group for part-time care. Working hours depend on the requested hours of day care.
If you want to become a private childminder, contact your district's private family day care su-pervisor and set a meeting at your home. The city of Vantaa has made a handbook which con-tains information on how to become a private family day care provider.
