Child Welfare

Matters concerning children's and young people's welfare (such as insecurity and the need for protection) are handled by the local social workers. They ascertain the need for help through interviews, home visits and expert reports.

Child welfare matters include solving problem situations, supporting, advising and guiding families, designating support workers for those who require them, arranging holidays, and taking children into custody and placing them outside their home. Social work for young offenders (between 15 and 17 years of age) falls under the duties of the social workers in charge of youth welfare.

Anyone who suspects that a child or youth is in need of child welfare protection should contact his or her local social worker.

For urgent matters during office hours (8.15 am to 4 pm), and in the evenings and at weekends, you can contact the crisis centre on 8392 4005.

Children's placing-out
Children's placing-out is a part of child welfare in which a child's or youth's care and upbringing is organised outside his or her own home. Placing-out is required when the family's own resources are not sufficient to ensure the child's or youth's growth and development. A child or youth can be placed in another family or child protection institution. The matters of placed children and young people are handled by the Child Welfare Special Services.
