Sustainable Urban Living

Design Competition for Students on Sustainable Small-scale Housing

How can our home help us find a more sustainable way of life?
Design a low-rise housing block in the Helsinki Metropolitan area in Finland combining social, ecological and economical sustainability!

The City of Vantaa and Housing Fair Finland Co-op together with Aalto University organise an international student competition with the aim to produce a sustainable city dwelling which is both technically and economically feasible. Vantaa, located in the Helsinki Metropolitan area, is one of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 cities. In 2015 the Finnish Housing Fair will be organized in the new Marja-Vantaa area. Its urban location provides an opportunity to study and showcase the possibilities of sustainable small-scale housing in a city.

The competition is open to all University students. The submissions can be made individually or in groups. There must be a minimum of one architecture student in each group but we would like to encourage students to form multidiciplinary groups as well. The competition organizers wish to encourage universities to offer their students the possibility to develop their proposals guided by their teacher, i.e. the competition task can be done as course work. The competition organizers also propose that the participating students be awarded ECTS credits for completing the competition. The best competiton proposals will be awarded a total of 10 000 euros. The organisers aim to find a realiser for the best proposal(s).

Competition began on 1.3.2012 and the deadline for submissions is 7.6.2012.

The registration to the competition was required and has ended on 30.4.2012.
