Assessing Service Need

Assessing service need means

  • charting the support and service needs of elderly customers,
  • providing guidance and counseling about different services supporting wellbeing.

The assessment usually takes place at the customer's home, in the presence of the customer, his or her relatives or friends, and senior citizens' welfare clinic's service counselor or another health- and social-welfare professional. The assessment charts the customer's background information, resources, state of health and functional abilities, social situation, relatives' or friends' participation in the customer's care, the customer's current services, as well as his or her need for new services. New services aim to support the customer's independent living at home.

The customer, his or her relative or friend, an official, or another person may request the assessment of service need

If a customer already receives some services, the personnel responsible for his or her care will assess his or her service needs.
