A safe city constitutes the foundation for the residents’ good life. Children and the young, in particular, spend a lot of time on city premises, which is why ensuring their safety is of the essence.   All city-owned premises shall adopt the principles of safer premises in 2022.

What do safer premises mean?

Safer spaces, or premises, are premises that provide the people present with reassurance of physical, mental, and social safety. The goal is that nobody be subjected to any form of discrimination, bullying, harassment, or violence. This entails, first and foremost, active measures to prevent the above and intervening in situations where the above occurs. Safe premises are also easy-to-access and barrier-free. Our wish is that everybody feels welcome to the City of Vantaa premises as themselves.

Adopting the principles of safer premises is a concrete measure that will help us actively promote the safety of every user of the city’s premises, as well as their possibility of participating in both using the premises and in the activities taking place on them as themselves.

In practice, this is accomplished by collecting joint principles together with the users and requiring everybody to comply with them.

Why are we talking about safer premises?

Sense of security is a subjective experience. We cannot ever guarantee that any premises are 100% safe for everybody, but we can promise to act in a way that makes the premises feel safer for everyone. The users as well are responsible for ensuring the safety of the premises.

Progress of work in Vantaa

The theme of the 2022 Influential Day is safer premises. Schools and educational institutions will work on their own principles of safer premises as part of implementing the Influential Day. The subject was introduced with the help of a preliminary task, as well as during the Influential Day on April 20, 2022. Schools and educational institutions’ principles of safer premises will be collected in September-October.

The aim is that as many city premises as possible have compiled their own principles of safer premises by the end of October, after which we will chart the situation. In November, we will be celebrating the Children's rights week, in connection of which, we will also celebrate the launching of the principles of safer premises on the City of Vantaa premises.

Vantaa Nicehearts’ Girls’ Space applies the principles of safer premises, as does Vantaa Art Museum Artsi. Ask for tips on collecting and implementing the principles.

The City of Vantaa participates in the UNICEF Child Friendly Cities initiative. The model is based on the United Nations’(UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child, and it aims to guarantee a good life for each and every child.
