Gubbmossen is located in the southwestern corner of Vantaa, in the city district of Linnainen. Most of the swamp area is pine bog with large subshrub vegetation with pines and the typical subshrubs, such as marsh Labrador tea, bog bilberry and bilberry. Similar to other larger swamps in Vantaa, Gubbmossen also has several swamp types. There are small open swamps in the middle of the pine bog, whereas the western part and the edge areas of the swamp have different types of forest swamps, where sp…ruces and broad-leaved trees are the dominant tree species.
Gubbmossen is a great place for learning about the swamp environment, as it clearly shows the variation that is typical to raised bogs, ranging from the nutrient-rich forest swamp types with thin peat layers near the edge of the swamp to the more barren pine bogs and poor fens closer to the middle of the swamp. Most of the swamp lies on the Espoo side of the border, and the lushest parts of it were turned into fields a long time ago.
On the Vantaa side, the Gubbmossen area became protected in 2003, and its size is 18.5 hectares.
For now, there are no marked paths in the Gubbmossen nature conservation area.
