Youth centers have new opening hours: All Vantaa's major regions offer something to do on a Saturday night
The youth centers administered by the City of Vantaa will have joint opening hours as of September 1. In addition, the opening hours of some of the youth centers will be changed so that at least one of the youth centers in each of Vantaa’s major region will offer the young something to do as well as a place to meet on Saturday nights.
The change in the opening hours is based on the wishes expressed by the young. As of September, all the 13 youth centers will be open from Monday to Thursday at 13:30-20:30 and on Friday at 15:00-22:30. On Saturdays, each region has at least one youth center that will be open from 15:00 to 22:30. Students in grades 4-6 are welcome to the youth centers on weekdays from 13:30 to 18:00, as well as on Fridays and Saturdays from 15:00 to 18:00. Seventh-graders - 17-year-olds are welcome to the youth centers after 15:00.
The opening hours of youth centers were planned on the basis of a survey targeted at the young and another survey for youth workers. The survey targeted at the young received 650 responses from various parts of Vantaa, whereas around 90% of employees responded the other survey. Youth centers, schools and outreach youth work encouraged the young to fill in the survey. The new opening hours will account for the wishes expressed by the young, for youth workers’ well-being at work, and they will make the opening hours of the different youth centers more unified.
“Joint opening hours are easier to remember, which is why the young should then have a low threshold of visiting any of the city-managed youth centers. Our Saturday opening hours make it possible for us to offer each young person in Vantaa a chance to find meaningful activities and companionship in his/her own district also on a weekend evening,” tells youth work manager Pekka Mäkelä.

The City of Vantaa has 13 youth centers in Hakunila-Länsimäki, Korso-Koivukylä, Myyrmäki-Martinlaakso, Tikkurila and Aviapolis-Kivistö regions.
