Vegan diet option available at all Vantaa daycare centers and educational institutions
Children and the young in Vantaa's early childhood education and educational institutions will have the option of a vegan food as of the beginning of the 2019 fall term. Vegan diet has already been tested in Vantaa's daycare centers, Martinlaakso school and Tikkurila high school, and a new vegan diet will be an option to everybody following it at home as well. Vantaa's educational institutions and daycare centers also offer a vegetarian option on a daily basis.
The trial showed that there is small-scale demand for vegan food. During the trial, 70 children or young people chose the vegan food option. According to students at Tikkurila high school, vegan food has been a desired option, because students following a vegan diet have earlier taken their own provisions with them for the school day.
“Offering the vegan option also supports the city's environmental values. Increasing the share of vegetarian food is part of sustainable development, which is one of the city's goals,” says purchase manager Sirpa Viinikari-Kauria.
Vantaan tilapalvelut Vantti, Palmia and Fazer Food Services will provide the meals for the City of Vantaa's daycare centers, schools, and high schools. The city will separately inform children, the young, and their guardians of the vegan food option. Those following a vegan diet shall notify their special diet on a form at the beginning of the fall operating period in educational institutions and early childhood education.
