Participatory budgeting implemented in Hakunila and Martinlaakso districts has entered its voting stage. All the residents in the districts ages 12 and over are eligible to vote on which of the ideas proposed by the residents in August-September to improve the districts will be implemented. The development ideas are connected with city-owned outdoor recreation areas such as parks, exercise areas and schoolyards. The voting takes place on October 20-November 16.

You can vote to, for example, have new outdoor exercise equipment, benches or flowerbeds in the districts. Hakunila vote entails, for instance, a frisbee-golf course, whereas Martinlaakso vote includes a group of tables in Koivikkopuisto.

“Participatory budgeting is an easy way to make an impact on one’s own neighborhood,” encourages community involvement coordinator Laura Lettenmeier.

There are around 30 different ideas to choose from in both of the districts. You can check out the ideas at the osallistu.vantaa.fi website that has descriptions of all of the ideas plus the city’s estimate of the sum needed to realize each of the ideas. You can vote for several ideas as long as the total sum does not exceed €50,000. Plans with the most votes and that are within the budget will be implemented in the summer season of 2021.

Vote online at osallistu.vantaa.fi. Log in the website with your email address. You can also vote at Hakunila and Martinlaakso libraries by presenting a document with your full name, for example, a Kela card or a loyalty card of some store.

Participatory budgeting is a new way for residents to make an impact on developing their neighborhood. In the idea-generation phase in early spring, residents submitted 228 ideas for developing their neighborhood, 142 ideas for Martinlaakso and 86 for Hakunila. The residents’ workshops arranged in early October worked on turning feasible ideas into plans that will be voted on. The ideas were combined and specified so that, in the end, around 30 plans for each of the two districts progressed into the voting phase.

The Our Hakunila and Our Martsari projects are implemented as part of the positive special treatment program.
