Vantaa is planning on building a light rail to combine Hakunila and Länsimäki regions with rail traffic and create a flexible connection to Tikkurila, Jumbo shopping center, Aviapolis, and Helsinki Airport. Detailed planning of the light rail route and its environs is going on, and the residents can participate in the planning.

The general plan of Vantaa Light Rail was completed in 2019. The city council decided that planning of the light rail will be continue. Further planning started in fall 2020, and it will devise street and park plans as well as local detailed plans that enable building of the light rail. In addition, a disposition plan to dictate urban development along the route will be devised.

The light rail is a significant investment into Vantaa’s future. It will have a leading role to play in stimulating the economy, since it will bring about new jobs and new business prospects along public transport connections. The light rail route will establish the most important growth channel of the city, and it is forecast to bring about 37,000 new residents and 30,000 jobs. Vantaa light rail also constitutes a fixed part of the light rail network evolving in the Helsinki metropolitan area

Myriad online participation options

Planning the light rail takes place on three parallel levels: street and park planning; local detailed plans; and disposition plan. Work began with publishing the disposition plan’s and local detailed plans’ participation and assessment plan, which also acts as the advance notice of the construction work for street and park planning.

The plan describes what will be planned on each of the levels, how work progresses, and how people can participate and influence the work. A short summary of it can be downloaded in English and the whole plan in Finnish (see below). It is also possible to leave a written opinion on the plan at the city archive by January 15, 2021.

Residents and parties concerned will be offered possibilities of participating and influencing planning of the light rail, to the extent possible. Four regional online events will be arranged in December 2020, which present the planning progress, as well as topical urban development in each area. The language of the presentations is Finnish.

Because of the current coronavirus situation, the events will take place as Microsoft Teams live meetings as follows:

In addition to the events, an online survey is open for collecting views and ideas related to planning the streets and art along the light rail route. The survey is in Finnish and it is open until January 15, 2021.

More instructions for both the survey and the public events are available in Finnish at:
