New city council began its term

Vantaa's new city councilors began their work in the first council-term meeting on August 23.

Vantaa city council consists of 67 city councilors, of which 31 are first-timers. The council places are divided as follows: the National Coalition Party: 18 council places; the Social Democratic Party of Finland: 16 places; the Finns: 12 places; the Greens: 9 places; the Left Alliance: 4 places; the Centre Party: 2 places; the Finnish Christian Democrats: 2 places; Movement Now: 2 places; and the Swedish People's Party: 2 places.

Antti Lindtman (the Social Democratic Party of Finland) was chosen as the chair of the city council, Lauri Kaira (the National Coalition Party) as the first vice-chair, and Erika Veltheim (the Finns) as the second vice-chair.

Sari Multala (the National Coalition Party) was chosen as the chair of the city executive board, Säde Tahvanainen (the Social Democratic Party of Finland) as the first vice-chair, and Mika Niikko (the Finns) as the second vice-chair. The other members of the city executive board are Maarit Raja-Aho (the National Coalition Party), Mika Kasonen (the National Coalition Party), Sakari Rokkanen (the National Coalition Party), Ulla Kaukola (the Social Democratic Party of Finland), Faysal Abdi (the Social Democratic Party of Finland), Visa Tammi (the Finns), Kai-Ari Lundell (the Finns), Tuukka Saimen (the Finns), Vaula Norrena (the Greens), Hanna Valtanen (the Greens), Pirjo Luokkala (the Centre Party), and Ville Karinen (the Left Alliance).

New committees

The city's committees were reformed as follows:

  • The new name of the Education Committee is Education and Learning Committee, below which operate the Swedish-language and the Individual Affairs sections.
  • The Leisure and Recreation Committee was renamed Urban Culture Committee.
  • The Urban Planning, Environmental and Technical Committee as well as the Building Permit Section, operating under the Urban Environment Department will terminate their operations; they will be replaced with the Urban Environment and Urban Space Committee as well as the Permit Section.

The name of the Health and Social Welfare Committee as well as the name of the Individual Affairs Section below it will remain unchanged.
