Donʼt spread rumours and misinformation about the Viertola tragedy

News

There is spreading untrue information about the tragedy at Viertola school on 2 April, especially on social media. Carers should remind children and young people that this "information" should be treated very critically. We also hope that carers will discuss with children and young people at home what kind of speech is appropriate in relation to what has happened.

Detective Inspector Sami Heikkilä and Ilkka Kalo, Director of Basic Education in Vantaa, point out that anyone can commit a crime, such as defamation, by spreading untrue allegations, pictures and names.

Spreading false information causes unnecessary suffering

Spreading rumours can cause harm and distress to innocent people. Everyone should respect the victims and their families.

Incorrect information can also cause extra stress for those who follow the debate on social media channels.

The police will inform once the investigation is complete

The police preliminary investigation is now underway. The police will officially announce the case when the investigation is completed. Until the preliminary investigation is completed, there is no certainty as to what happened and why.

Detective Inspector Heikkilä hopes that parents will also discuss the matter with their children in order to avoid spreading rumours. If school pupils or guardians have information about the sources of the rumours, they should inform the police for investigation.

The police are continuing to investigate the case and will provide further information as the investigation progresses.
