Introduction

In apprenticeship training, vocational studies are learned at workplaces and then complemented with the theory studies in a field's educational institute. The share of theory studies is 1-5 days per month, depending on the degree in question, possible previous education and work experience

All upper secondary vocational qualifications can be completed through apprenticeship training: vocational upper secondary qualifications, further vocational qualifications and specialist vocational qualifica
tions. The degree programmes of apprenticeship training take 1-3 years. After graduation, the students will also be qualified to apply for higher education in universities.

Apprenticeship is a fixed-term contract between an employer and a student, and the company will pay the student a salary determined in the collective agreement from the duration of the apprenticeship. A training compensation will be paid for the employer.

Prerequisites

It is available to anyone over the age of 15, as long as they have a job or work as an entrepreneur. An employment relationship can be an existing relationship or it can be initiated through recruitment.

Apprenticeship training is a good option when

  •  training personnel for new and changing duties

  •  the employee lacks vocational training

  •  the employer wishes to refresh the staff’s professional competence

  •  recruiting new employees

  •  an entrepreneur wants to train and develop their own competence in their company

The same degrees can be learned through apprenticeship training as through institutional education.

Contents of apprenticeship training

  • A fixed term employment and training relationship (with a four-month trial period) that ends when the agreed apprenticeship term has ended

  • The wages, working hours, holidays and occupational safety matters all adhere to the collective agreement

  • The job duties must be varied and well suited to the degree studies.

  • The quantity of information-oriented training depends on the goals of the training as well as the student’s individual study plan.

  • Includes both on-the-job learning (about 80%) and information-oriented teaching organised by the educational institute (about 20%)

An individualised study plan will be compiled for a student, which also takes into consideration the student’s previous studies and work experience. This plan will always be customised to the company’s needs, and it will be updated and specified over the course of the entire training.
