What is the Competence Campus?
The Competence Campus is a new urban area being developed on a vacant plot in Jokiniemi, Tikkurila, between 2024 and 2032. It will provide space for educational institutions, businesses, city services, housing, retail, restaurants, and cultural activities. Once completed, the campus will be an inspiring environment and community where people and ideas meet.
Why is the campus being built?
The goal is to create new kinds of conditions for working life oriented education, entrepreneurship, innovation, collaboration, and improved public services. The campus also aims to strengthen the vitality of the Tikkurila area and expand the city center across the railway into Jokiniemi.
What will be built on the campus?
- A block for educational institutions: Tikkurila Upper Secondary School, Varia Vocational College, Vantaa Adult Education Institute, and Vantaa Music Institute
- A services block bringing together experts and services for integration, skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship
- Blocks for commerce, culture, office spaces, accommodation services, and housing
- Renovated spaces e.g. for an art café in the historically valuable Grönberg Villa
- Two parking garages serving campus users
When will the campus be completed?
The campus area will be developed in phases, with the first buildings expected to be completed in 2028–2029. The entire area is estimated to be completed in the early 2030s.
How will construction affect mobility in the area?
Construction work and site traffic may cause temporary changes to traffic arrangements. The construction of the Vantaa Light Rail may also affect mobility in the area. The city aims to minimize disruptions and will provide timely updates and clearly marked detours when needed.
