Pupil and student welfare

You can contact the school social worker if, for example, it seems difficult at school, there are worries at home or there are challenges with life management. The school social worker can give support to an individual student or their whole family. The pupil can contact the school social worker themself but the guardian can also contact them.

A psychologist helps with matters related to learning, schooling, emotional life or working in a group. The pupil can contact the curator themself but the guardian can also contact them.

Each school has a designated school nurse and a doctor. The pupil meets the school nurse in health checks. In addition to health checks, you can contact the school nurse if you are worried about your own health, mood or ability to cope.

In addition to the school psychologist, school social worker and school nurse, many other adults are also responsible for the pupils' well-being:

• The principal is overall responsible for the student care work of their school.
• The role of the classroom teacher, special class teacher or homeroom teacher is to act as the pupil’s closest adult in the school and as the primary point of contact between the school and the home.
• The guidance counsellor is an expert in student guidance. Guidance counsellor helps and encourages the student to find their own path. Guidance counsellor also participates in the planning of postgraduate studies. Read more about guidance counselling.
• The special needs teacher supports and guides growth and learning skills. The special needs teacher assesses the student's need for support in learning and schooling.

Students are offered a health nurse's examination during the first year of study and a doctor's examination during the first or second year of study. If necessary, the health nurse can refer the student to, for example, a doctor, psychiatric nurse, curator or psychologist.

Social worker and psychologist services for early childhood education are offered in some of the daycare centers. Psychologists and social workers support the child's well-being, growth and development and help with issues of parenting and education.

Social worker and psychologist services for pre-primary education are offered in all pre-primary education units. The pre-primary education psychologist or social worker helps the child if the child has difficulties, for example, in learning, emotional life or working in a group.

Maternity and child care clinics' health nurses promote the physical, psychological and social health and well-being of the child and their family.
