The artworks in Artsi's exhibition reflect on our relationship with nature, bringing perspectives of hope alongside crisis awareness. The exhibition examines the relationship with nature especially through the experience of merging, connections between people and nature, adventure and the possibility of disappearing.
Rebecca Louise Law's large-scale installation made from natural materials will take over a large part of Artsi's exhibition space. The exhibition also includes works by artist duo IC-98, Satu Autero, Emma Helle and Kari Vehosalo.
Rebecca Louise Law
Installation artist Rebecca Louise Law makes large, site-specific spatial installations that she creates from natural materials. In the exhibition hall, the viewer can literally walk inside Law's artwork. The installation is based on the artist's collection of plant materials, which she has augmented over 20 years by growing, collecting from nature with permission and receiving donations. The artist recycles her materials from one installation to another, and it is characteristic of her thinking that there is no material waste even after the exhibition. The focus of Law’s art is on the idea of appreciating nature, giving time and stopping in the moment.
Law is also characterized by a desire to work with local communities and create connections between people. In the realization of an installation completed in Artsi local schoolchildren, among others, have been involved in installation and they have collected material for the artwork. The schoolchildren have also been able to participate in workshops where they have been able to create a thread for installation themselves, which has later been incorporated into the installation. Thus, the installation itself consists of both parts produced by schoolchildren who participated in the workshops and material brought by the artist.
IC-98
IC-98's animated artwork Abendland (Hours, Years, Aeons) from 2015 explores what nature and the environment could look like in a post-human world. How would living and non-living nature dominate in time after environmental destruction? IC-98's dark-toned artwork imagines and contemplates the future of the world, reaching into the time after human.
Kari Vehosalo
Kari Vehosalo's painting Passage (2023) resembles a photograph at first glance. However, there is something special or unreal about the mood and details of the painting. Is the view an adventure, an opportunity to merge or a plunge into the unknown?
Emma Helle
Sculptor Emma Helle's sculpture Rose and Artichoke (2022), which evokes the gentle touch of nature, the palms, arms, cheeks and eyelashes of human figures peek out from the lush natural surroundings. In the sculpture of Helle, various plants, flowers and human figures merge.
Satu Autero
Photographer Satu Autero's dark-toned photographs in the Visions series (1995) show a reference to human's presence in nature. The starting point for the photographs has been to look at the familiar natural environment in a new way.
