The education and learning committee decided in its May meeting on changes that affect the grounds for school transportation for preschoolers and elementary school students. In the future, the benefit can be granted for a shorter school travel.

The changes are as follows:

  • Children in pre-primary education as well as those in first and second grades may be entitled to the transportation benefit, when the length of their school travel exceeds three kilometers. The earlier limit was five kilometers. Preschoolers mainly get the benefit this way: their guardians are compensated for the travel costs according to the prices of public transportation. Students in grades one and two are granted a free-of-charge public transportation travel card for schoolchildren.

  • Those students in grades 7-9 who have a special support decision may get a free-of-charge public transportation travel card, when the length of their school travel exceeds three kilometers. The benefit was previously granted only to students in grades 1-6 needing special support, but now students with special support decision can receive the benefit for the entire period of elementary school.

The new grounds for school transportation will enter into force on August 1, 2023.
