The Mayor talks about Vantaa's growth and the opportunities it brings in an editorial in this autumn's Residents' Magazine.

Vantaa reached a milestone of 250 000 inhabitants this autumn. It's not just a number, but a sign that our city is growing, developing and attracting new residents.  At the same time, it is good to pause and reflect on what city growth means now and in the future.
Vantaa has always been a diverse city. For decades we have welcomed people from different backgrounds, cultures and life situations. Diversity is reflected in our everyday life, in our schools, in our workplaces and in our cultural life.

Vantaa's strength lies in its ability to change and evolve together with its residents. This is a city that does not stand still and does not get stuck in the past. Everyone makes a unique contribution and together we create a vibrant, dynamic and forward-looking city.
As the city grows and changes, it is important that we share common values. Vantaa is built on equality, justice and equity. Every new Vantaa citizen is a full-blooded Vantaa citizen from day one. Together, let's make sure that every new resident feels welcome and that everyone has the opportunity to build their own life in Vantaa.

Vantaa is a city of young people. Children and young people are the core of our future, and their well-being must be at the heart of the city's development. But we also have an ageing population. We must ensure that both the ageing population and children and young people receive the support and services they need.

Vantaa is by many measures one of the most dynamic and vibrant cities in Finland. The latest projections suggest that Vantaa could exceed 300 000 inhabitants by around 2040. We need bold thinking and new, sustainable solutions.

A growing Vantaa must also be a better Vantaa. So let us continue to develop the city with great pride and responsibility - for the benefit of every Vantaa resident.

Pekka Timonen, Mayor
