The syllabus of a general upper secondary school comprises at least 75 courses or 150 study credits. The studies can be completed in 2-4 years. The studies are completed as study periods. Study periods usually comprise 1-3 study credits and may include studies from one or more subjects. A national final examination, the matriculation examination, must be taken at the end of general upper secondary school studies.

General upper secondary schools offer a wide range of study subjects, such as mot…her tongue and foreign languages, mathematics and natural science subjects, humanities and social studies, religion or ethics, health sciences, sports and art and physical education.
