Pedestrians
Walking and pedestrian travel in Vantaa is promoted for everyone and in all situations. The goal is to make walking attractive throughout the year.
Pedestrian travel is a fundamental part of every journey. In addition to walkers, pedestrians include wheelchair users, individuals using mobility-assisting or substituting devices, people pushing bicycles or mopeds, kick scooter riders, roller skaters, and those moving with strollers.
Walkable Vantaa is designed to meet a variety of needs – from everyday errands to recreation and urban experiences. A pleasant walking environment also invites people to stay, relax and enjoy the city.
Accessibility of walking Routes
Accessible pedestrian connections and routes significantly improve mobility and travel chains. Accessibility is considered in all aspects of walking environment design and is planned and developed based on the environment and its user groups, either according to basic-level or specialized-level design principles.
The basic level refers to solutions that meet general accessibility requirements, while the specialized level aims to accommodate specific groups with tailored features, such as guidance strips for the visually impaired. Specialized-level accessible environments include pedestrian street areas, public transport terminal zones, and surroundings of elderly, disability and social and healthcare services.
In Vantaa, principles for defining specialized-level accessible routes were established in 2023, forming the basis for a target network of such routes. In 2024, a study was conducted on safe mobility for the visually impaired, which refined solutions such as guiding strips.
