The TET period (Work Experience Placement) is a vital part of middle school. It’s your chance to see what working life is really like and can help you figure out what you might want to study in the future.

Here is a summary of everything you need to know:

What does TET mean in practice?

  • Pay: TET is a part of your school curriculum; therefore, it is unpaid.
  • Working Hours: You will follow the schedule of your workplace, but the day is typically around 6 hours long.
  • Lunch: If your workplace is located far from the school, you may be eligible for a meal allowance or a lunch voucher.

How to find a TET placement

  • Apply independently: Be bold! Contact companies that interest you. You can call them, send an email, or visit in person to ask about opportunities.
  • Ask for help: If you’re having trouble finding a spot, reach out to your Guidance Counselor (OPO).
  • Use online resources: There are websites available that list local businesses specifically looking to host students.

Tips for your search

  • Start early: The most popular spots are taken quickly—don't wait!
  • Prepare an "Elevator Pitch": Have a short introduction ready. State your name, your grade level, and explain why you are interested in that specific company.
  • Be professional: A polite attitude and a good first impression go a long way in securing a placement!

Pro-Tip: Think about your hobbies or favorite school subjects. If you love sports, try a gym or a sports equipment store. If you love technology, look for a local repair shop or IT office!

Safety and Regulations During Your TET Placement

Even though you are a student, you are protected by the same labor laws as paid employees. These rules are in place to ensure your safety and well-being.

Core Rules at a Glance:

  • No Hazardous Tasks: Students under 18 are strictly prohibited from performing work that is dangerous to their health or physical safety (e.g., handling toxic chemicals, using heavy industrial machinery, or working in high-risk environments).
  • No Night Shifts: Students are not permitted to work overnight hours.
  • Supervision: You should always have a designated supervisor to guide you and ensure tasks are performed safely.

Working Hours

Your maximum daily hours and the times you are allowed to work depend on your age:

Age Group Permitted Work Hours
14 years old Between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM
15–17 years old Between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM

Guidelines for Your TET Period

Workplace Rules and Expectations

Every workplace has its own specific rules. Be sure to follow them and keep these general guidelines in mind:

  • Be on Time: Punctuality is key. Arrive exactly at the time you agreed upon with your supervisor.
  • Be Proactive and Diligent: Take pride in your work and do your tasks carefully. If you finish a task early, don’t just wait—be bold and ask for something new to do!
  • Ask for Guidance: If you aren't sure how to do something or don't understand an instruction, ask immediately. The professionals at your workplace are there to help you.
  • Be Polite: Remember, while at your placement, you are representing yourself, your family, and your school. Always maintain a professional and respectful attitude.
  • Maintain Confidentiality: You may overhear or see information at your workplace that is private. You are bound by the same confidentiality obligations as the regular employees—do not share sensitive workplace details with outsiders or on social media.
