Towards a more culturally diverse working life
Vantaa is involved in the Muutostöissä campaign, which aims to open peopleʼs eyes to the possibilities of a culturally diverse working life and the obstacles to it: ignorance, conditioning and beliefs.
Three of the influencers involved in the Muutostöissä campaign: Jasmin Ngo, Aishah Muhammed and Dave Cad.
In Finland, the Constitution safeguards the principle of equality, according to which no one may be placed in a different position without an acceptable reason on the basis of gender, age, origin, language, religion, belief, opinion, health, disability or other personal grounds. In order for Finnish working life to remain competitive and meet the requirements of cultural equality, changes in attitudes are required from those involved in working life.
The Muutostöissä (Change at Work) campaign, which started on 5 September, wants to appeal to everyone in the workplace: an open attitude towards cultural diversity is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace. The campaign will involve 20 social media influencers from different cultural backgrounds living in Finland.
The influencers represent a wide range of perspectives: job seekers, job creators and employers. The themes they highlight include cultural literacy as a modern work life skill, different cultural realities in Finnish working life and everyday life as a job seeker, employer and entrepreneur with an immigrant background.
The City of Vantaa is unequivocally committed to promoting equality and non-discrimination
Promotion means active work, both in words and, above all, in deeds.
− Genuine equality and equity are achieved when these issues are taken into account in all activities and decision-making. Vantaa is already the most international city in Finland in terms of population, so this is also an important issue for us, says Tommo Koivusalo, Director of Vitality in the City of Vantaa.
Tommo adds that everyone needs to be involved in order to maintain and develop our welfare society.
− Diverse communities produce more sustainable results. So our message to businesses in Vantaa is: take advantage of the diversity of our growing city and use it to gain a sustainable competitive advantage, says Tommo.
One concrete way to take a step towards a more international workplace is to attend the Talent Boost Summit business event in Vantaa on 23 November. The event will feature company presentations and workshops led by industry experts and other companies offering insights on recruiting employees with an international background and managing a diverse workplace. In addition, the event's TalentMatch recruitment event will provide companies with an easy way to network with international jobseekers in Finland.
