Statements by the City Board on the Vantaa tram depot and Vantaa Energy sorting facility

Release

At its meeting on 8 September, the City Board of Vantaa decided to issue statements regarding an appeal concerning the Vaarala depot of the Vantaa tram and the mixed waste sorting facility project planned by Vantaa Energy in the Långmosseberg area.

The City Board decided to submit a statement to the Helsinki Administrative Court concerning the appeal lodged against the detailed plan for the Vaarala depot. The Vantaa City Council has approved the detailed plan, but it has been appealed to the Helsinki Administrative Court. The statement requests that the appeal be dismissed as unfounded.

The Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment has requested a statement from the City of Vantaa on whether an environmental impact assessment procedure should be applied to the mixed waste sorting facility project planned by Vantaa Energy Ltd in Långmosseberg. According to the statement, the city considers that such a procedure is not necessary, as the facility does not have significant environmental impacts. Environmental effects and risks of pollution can be addressed through a high-quality environmental permit and supervision process. Environmental impact assessments already carried out in the area can also be partly utilised in the environmental permitting process for the facility.
