Almost 300 ideas were submitted in Havukoski, Länsimäki and Mikkola participatory budgeting

Participatory budgeting, that is, a process where residents can decide on developing their own area with a sum of €50,000, is taking place in Havukoski, Länsimäki and Mikkola.

The first stage — when residents submit ideas about developing their own district — ended on Sunday, May 16. There were 108 ideas concerning Havukoski, 92 concerning Länsimäki, and 77 for Mikkola. Most ideas were related to physical exercise and outdoor activities, as well as to parks and nature. Popular ideas included, for instance, flowerbeds, planting of cherry trees, and exercise equipment, which were suggested for all of the areas. Among the ideas are also, among others, trampoline and cultivation boxes for Mikkola, a basketball court for Havukoski, and renovating an outdoor recreation trail in Länsimäki. The ideas submitted also consisted of various events: open-air dancing, voluntary cleaning, flea market, and singalong events. All the ideas can be viewed online at osallistu.vantaa.fi.

“It's wonderful that residents enthusiastically submitted so many versatile ideas. Thanks go to everybody who participated!” applauds community involvement coordinator Laura Lettenmeier.

Next, the city's experts will familiarize themselves with the ideas. The ideas that can be implemented within the participatory budgeting framework will proceed to further development.
Workshops arranged in August will work on the plans that can be executed, and they will be voted on in the fall. The workshops are open to all the residents and they combine, revise and specify the ideas together with the city's experts. For instance, if there are several wishes for more benches, the ideas may be combined into a single plan. The exact times of the future workshops are not yet known. The workshop schedules and enrollment instructions will be announced in more detail during the summer.

The ideas to be implemented will be selected by a vote arranged in the fall, on September 22-October 17. People of all ages are eligible to vote.
