Vantaa’s housing advisors help with problems related to housing
The purpose of the new housing counseling service—launched in June—is to prevent and solve problems related to housing, to advise customers in issues related to housing, and to refer them to the appropriate services.
The City of Vantaa and the Vantaa and Kerava wellbeing services county have employed six housing professionals as of the beginning of June. The housing advisors help customers gain housing, as well as in challenges related to continued housing. The service is meant for all Vantaa residents. Moreover, it is free of charge, regardless of the type of housing.
“You can contact the housing advisors, for example, in case of rent debt, or if you are in danger of being evicted. Besides these, we help in myriad other housing-related challenges. We have received contacts regarding, among other things, return of rent deposit, quarrels with neighbors, and pest control,” says housing advisor Veera Lähde.
Changes in housing allowance and the tighter policy regarding social assistance are already seen in the everyday lives of Housing Counseling's customers.
“During the summer, customers’ need to search for more affordable housing units has been emphasized. The customers need apartments whose rents fall below the municipality-specific limits set for basic social assistance.
Low-threshold counseling
Housing advice is a low-threshold service that you can also contact anonymously. Vantaa's housing advisors encourage customers to contact them as early as possible, before problems pile up.
“It is never too late. Help is available even if eviction is pending or has already been executed,” Lähde reminds.
Housing advisors actively cooperate with various authorities, the city’s actors, as well as other partners.
“If Housing Advice’s tools are not enough to solve the customer’s situation, we strive to ensure that the customer finds the correct support,” Lähde emphasizes.
