Vantaa Light Rail Construction on Länsimäentie During Summer 2026
Along Länsimäentie, construction of the Vantaa Tram will involve several simultaneous work phases throughout the summer and early autumn. The works include tree felling, rock excavation and blasting, utility construction, street construction, and bridge construction. These activities will periodically affect traffic, pedestrian routes, and cycling, particularly around the Porvoonväylä bridge, Fazerintie, and the Länsimäki School area.
Fazerintie Area
At the beginning of August, tree felling and rock excavation works will begin between Länsimäentie and Fazerintie. Particularly noisy blasting operations will also take place in the northern section of Länsimäentie between Fazerintie and the future Vaarala depot.
Construction of the access road to the Vaarala depot will continue during the summer north of the Fazerintie roundabout. In addition, utility works will begin near the roundabout in July.
The first tram tracks in the area will be installed in July between Porvoonväylä and Fazerintie.
Porvoonväylä Bridge Area
Construction of the new bridge crossing Porvoonväylä will affect traffic throughout the summer. Traffic lane arrangements will change near the bridge, and traffic will be temporarily stopped during blasting operations in July.
The positions of traffic lanes on Länsimäentie have also been adjusted to allow bridge construction to proceed safely. Bus stop locations may change as the work progresses. HSL will provide more detailed information on any bus stop relocations.
Marathon Road Roundabout Area and the Vicinity of Länsimäki School
The underpass on Länsimäentie will be closed and permanently removed from use. A new bridge and underpass will be constructed in its place, as the existing bridge structure is not capable of supporting the future tram line. A temporary route will be available during construction.
At Länsimäki School, the construction area will be located along the eastern side of the road, but vehicle traffic will continue to pass through the area. Pedestrian and cycling routes will largely remain on their current alignments on the side of Länsimäki School and the Länsimäki Skate Park. When schools reopen in August, clear and safe routes will be arranged for students, and schools will be informed separately.
Near Länsimäki School, utility works, foundations for the tram’s electrical infrastructure, and road structure works will be carried out during the summer. The goal is to complete the final asphalt surface on the eastern side of the area in August.
Municipal utility infrastructure will be constructed at several locations within the intersection area of Rajakentäntie and Pallastunturintie, resulting in minor adjustments to lane arrangements.
On the closed section of Länsimäentie, work will continue throughout the summer on preload embankments, municipal utility construction, and rock excavation and blasting. Residents will also be informed about these activities through separate noise notifications.
