Mummun ja Vaarin Tupa (Grandma and Grandpa’s House) activities offer low-threshold meeting places as part of the preventive work of SOS Children’s Villages. At the meeting place, people of different ages get together on a weekly basis for an evening meeting. During the evening, families with children spend time together with volunteer support grandmas and grandpas, talking and playing. During the evening, a hot meal is also prepared together. The meal is a central part of the evening, and it is prepared by the instructor and volunteers and eaten together at the table with the children and their parents.
The meeting place brings generations together in daily life. Children and their parents get to enjoy the company of elderly people and vice versa. Bringing people together regardless of age results in interaction and a sense of community between people of different ages.
“A little boy arrives at the meeting place. He chooses a board game, sits happily on the floor with the game on his lap and waits. The short wait is rewarded when the support grandpa arrives and is ready to play together. A few other children also sit on the floor to join the support grandpa and the little boy. It is time to begin the game – and an important meeting between two generations.”
In Vantaa, Mummun ja Vaarin Tupa activities are held in the Nissas residential park on Wednesday evenings, in the Vihertie residential park on Thursday evenings and at the Koivukylä open meeting place on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
