What is Studyinfo and how does the joint application work?

Studyinfo.fi is a website where you apply for school after middle school. The website is maintained by the Finnish National Agency for Education.

Behind Studyinfo is the Koski database. Koski is a register where study and degree information is saved. Information from middle school, high school, vocational school, and universities, among others, can be found in Koski.

You can view your own study information in the My Studyinfo service. Log in to the service using online banking credentials or a mobile ID.

A student in the final grade of middle school applies for further studies through the joint application. In the joint application, you can apply anywhere in Finland to

  • general upper secondary school (high school)
  • vocational education (such as vocational or business college)
  • folk high school option year

The joint application is completed at school with the guidance counselor during a study guidance class or in the counselor's office.

What other options exist besides general upper secondary school or vocational education?

Preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification TUVA is an option in the joint application.

It is mainly intended for students who do not get accepted into general upper secondary school or vocational education, but it is also open to students who need extra time to figure out their next steps.

In addition to degree programs and preparatory education, middle school graduates can fulfill compulsory education requirements at folk high schools or through educational programs at youth workshops.

Folk high school applications use the same joint application form as general upper secondary, vocational, and preparatory programs.

Students cannot move directly into the workforce after completing basic education. The only exceptions are fulfilling compulsory education by completing skills demonstrations and assessments through adult vocational education, or earning a qualification through an apprenticeship.

However, options like apprenticeships are demanding because they require independent studying while working a job.

Typically, young people switch to an apprenticeship near the end of their vocational studies or during their work-based learning, once most of the classroom and theoretical coursework is done.

With an apprenticeship, students sign a job contract with an employer and earn a salary, but they must also study in the evenings and attend scheduled classroom sessions.

Additional information is available in Finnish on Varia's apprenticeship services page Apprenticeship Guide for Students and Employers.

Ministry of Education and Culture: Questions and answers related to compulsory education

Duty to apply for education

A student subject to compulsory education must apply for upper secondary education before completing their final year of basic education. The duty to apply remains in effect until the student secures a study place.

Generally, students apply during the joint application process in the spring of 9th grade. If a student does not secure a place in the joint application, they must apply for upper secondary education through rolling admissions—either for vocational education, general upper secondary education, or preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification (TUVA)

Suspension of Compulsory Education

A student subject to compulsory education may apply for a temporary suspension of their compulsory education requirement:

  1. due to a long-term illness or disability that prevents the fulfillment of compulsory education;
  2. for the duration of maternity, paternity, or parental leave;
  3. for a temporary stay abroad lasting at least one month, provided the student participates in equivalent education abroad or can otherwise be deemed to be fulfilling their compulsory education requirement;
  4. due to another compelling personal or life situation that prevents the fulfillment of compulsory education.

Compulsory education may also be suspended indefinitely if the obstacle referred to in item 1 is permanent in nature.

The education provider makes the decision to suspend compulsory education upon application by the student or their guardian.

Before making a decision based on items 1 or 4, it must be determined whether fulfilling compulsory education is possible through individualized choices, necessary support measures, or reasonable accommodations.

Final Assessment in Elective A2 or B2 Languages

A guardian of a middle school student may, upon request in writing, ask that a numerical grade in an optional A2 or B2 language be replaced on the final report card with a "Pass" mark ("S" for hyväksytty). In this case, it will not affect the grade point average (GPA) and will not be considered in the joint application process.

This applies to optional languages such as Spanish, French, German, and Russian.

English and Swedish, however, are always given numerical grades on the final report card, even if the student took Swedish as an A2 language.

To submit a written request, print and fill out the form below, then turn it in to the school guidance counselor or main office secretary.
