Introduction

Either religion or ethics are taught in basic education. A student can also receive teaching in their own religion in primary and lower secondary schools in Vantaa. Students are enrolled in religion and ethics teaching when registering for school or with a student information form filled in annually.

In addition to the state church religions (Evangelical Lutheran and Orthodox), four different minority religions are taught in Vantaa:

  • Catholic

  • Islam

  • Buddhist

  • Hare Krishna movement

If a student belongs to a religious society for which there is no religion teaching provided at school, they can also take part in ethics education or the teaching of Evangelical Lutheran religion, upon the guardian’s request. If the school does not offer teaching in the student’s own religion, the student’s religious community can provide this teaching as education outside the school.
