The city-bike season begins again in Vantaa on April 1. This year, the city provides the service free of charge! Vantaa celebrates its 50-year-old journey as a city, in honour of which, the city offers its residents and other people visiting Vantaa a free-of-charge 2024 city-bike season.

Vantaa offers 1 000 city bikes, as well as 121 stations. The stations are located in Tikkurila, Myyrmäki, Aviapolis, Koivukylä, and Kivistö.

You can cycle for free with the jubilee-year season ticket. The season lasts from the beginning of April till the end of October. You can cycle continuously for, at maximum, two hours, whereas a fee of €1 per hour will be charged for potential additional time. At most, you can use the bike for five hours at a time. Nevertheless, during the same day, you can cycle free of charge if you take several independent cycling periods amounting to at maximum two hours per cycling period. After you are through with using the bike, you must return it to the station, after which, you can begin a new two-hour journey if you like.

The city wants to support sustainable, emission-free mobility, as well as to make it possible for people who do not have a bike to cycle. The free-of-charge city bikes are the answer to this, says Emmi Pasanen, development manager of Vantaa’s transport systems.

Register and choose Vantaa 50 lippu (“Vantaa 50 ticket”) from the application

In order to start using city bikes, you must register yourself as a user on the Vantaan kaupunkipyörät (“Vantaa city bikes”) application. You can download the app from your phone's App Store and Google Play application stores. Even though using a city bike for less than two continuous hours is free of charge, you must add your payment card data in the app when you register as a user.

After registering, choose the free-of-charge Vantaa 50 -lippu, after which you are free to start cycling. The city-bike season begins on April 1, but you can register in the application and choose the ticket already. Vantaa has its own city-bike system, different from those deployed by Helsinki and Espoo, and the free-of-charge season ticket only applies to Vantaa’s city bikes.

You can choose to use the bikes solely with the Vantaan kaupunkipyörät app, but you can also use your Helsinki Region Transport, HSL card instead of the app. The app allows you not only to use the bikes but also to plan your journey, since the app shows you all the city-bike stations, as well as how many free bikes there are in each station. Moreover, you can choose city bikes as a transport mode on HSL’s Reittiopas (“route planner”).

There were some problems with taking the city bikes into use and with returning them last year. The problems were caused by the network connection problems between the city bikes’ back-end system and the bikes. During the winter, we have improved the operational reliability of the network connection.

If you have problems using the bikes, do not hesitate to contact the customer service of the bike operator, CityBike Finland. You will find the contact information on your city-bike application, as well as on the HSL website
