Vantaa upper secondary schools will celebrate the “penkkarit” (benchpressing fest) on Thursday, February 5th 2026, and the Formal Ball on Friday, February 6th! Welcome to choose the best penkkari-costumes and slogans, and enjoy the variety of beautiful ball gowns and cool moves at the Formal Ball at Energia Areena!

Benchpressing celebration 2024 in Vantaa

According to tradition, penkkari-trucks will drive separately in East Vantaa and West Vantaa. Graduates from Vaskivuori and Martinlaakso upper secondary schools climb the trucks running the West Vantaa route, whereas graduates from Tikkurila, Sotunki and Lumo upper secondary schools, as well as from Helsinge gymnasium, take the East Vantaa route. 

Welcome to cheer the graduates along the routes, see their costumes and slogans, and, of course, pick up candies!

Routes and schedules:

East Vantaa (Tikkurila, Sotunki and Lumo upper secondary schools, as well as Helsinge gymnasium). Departure on February 5th, at 12:30 from Tikkurila indoor ice rink, assembly around 12:00

West Vantaa (Martinlaakso and Vaskivuori upper secondary schools): Departure on February 5th, at 13:00 from Myyrmäki indoor ice rink, assembly around 12:45

Route: Raappavuorentie – Martinlaaksontie – Laajaniityntie – Laaja-vuorentie – Kivivuorentie – Kivimäentie - Kukintie - Martinlaaksontie – Louhelantie – Vaski-vuorentie – Myyrmäentie – Uomatie – Raappavuorentie – Virtatie – Myyrmäentie – Vaskivuorentie – Raappavuorentie – Rajatorpantie – Jönsaksentie – Vaskivuorentie.

After the benchpressing fest, the graduates begin their study vacation, to prepare themselves for the spring matriculation examination. The spring matriculation exams will begin on March 10, with the mother-tongue and literature textual skills test, as well as with the Finnish/Swedish as the second language test.

The formal ball will take place at Vantaa high schools on Friday, Febryary 6th

When the graduates end actual upper secondary school work and start preparing for the matriculation examinations, the students that began upper secondary school a year after them become the “elders” of the school. This is celebrated by the formal ball, in Finnish "Vanhojen tanssit". 

As usual, the upper secondary schools celebrate this immediately after the benchpressing day, that is, on Friday, February 6th 

Most upper secondary schools admit the friends and relatives of the dancers, other students at the high schools, personnel, and students at nearby schools.

Vaskivuori upper secondary schools “elderly” dance in the event that is open for public. Welcome to see the different dances and wonderful outfits!
