Becoming a service provider of private early childhood education

The City of Vantaa has compiled a guide for private early childhood education, which gives instructions on how to set up a private family day care service (in Finnish).

A private family day care instructor takes care for the children at their own home or at the children’s home. Work as a private family day care instructor suits many kinds of life situations. Many start this work while they are staying at home and taking care of their own children.

Training in the field and experience in childcare and raising children are often expected. The facilities must also be safe and well-suited to the children’s needs, such as playing, resting and eating. However, you do not have to work alone. The city supervises the operations of private family day care instructors, and you can also see other instructors every day on playgrounds, for example. A private family day care instructor can choose the children they will care for and decide the price for the services. One family day care instructor can care for no more than four children under school age at a time. This also includes the instructor’s own children that are not yet in school. In addition, they can take on one preschool or school aged child that neds part-time care. The working hours depend on the care needs.

You can become a private family day care instructor by contacting the day care directors supervising family day care services. A meeting with the supervisor will be agreed in advance, held at the home of the person interested in becoming a family day care instructor.
