City Council handled the 2023-2024 environmental liability report: Vantaa’s greenhouse gas emissions declined in 2023
Vantaa City Council entered for information the 2023-2024 environmental liability report in its meeting on Monday, September 16. The report that describes the progress of the city’s environmental liability work shows, among other things, that Vantaa’s greenhouse gas emissions declined in 2023 after a couple of years’ increase. During the reporting period, the city was developed toward carbon neutrality and resource smartness, the city’s urban structure became more integrated, and the number of residents in densely populated areas increased. Over 96% of new housing plans were placed in the sustainable growth zone.
The meeting also ratified the alteration to the local detailed plan for Hämeenkylä. The alteration makes it possible to demolish the office and industrial buildings at the end of Karhunkierros and build the area into an efficient urban block. The aim is to build high-rise residential buildings and small houses, multi-facility premises for residents, parking halls, as well as a daycare center.
In addition, the city made its second jubilee-year decision of Vantaa’s 50th anniversary year: establishing age-friendly parks in all of Vantaa’s city centers. The aim is to implement the age-friendly parks during 2026-2030 in park areas situated in the city centers of Aviapolis, Hakunila, Kivistö, Koivukylä, Korso, Myyrmäki, and Tikkurila. The exact locations of the parks have not yet been chosen, but more detailed planning will begin in the course of fall 2024 together with residents.
The city council meeting also handled city councilors’ initiatives regarding putting a stop to biodiversity loss, as well as regarding participatory budgeting.
