Multilingual Guidance supports foreign-language speakers in Vantaa in their day-to-day lives and integration. Although the service provides vital support for many people in the early stages of immigration, multilingual advice also serves residents of Vantaa who have lived in Finland for longer.
Vantaa’s Multilingual Guidance Service is a statutory service. The Integration Act requires local authorities to provide guidance and advice to immigrants and to help them find the services they need
Guidance provided in one’s own language makes it easier to deal with official matters and lowers the threshold for seeking help. The aim is to ensure that everyone receives the information, support and services they need on an equal basis.

Experts say: “We work togethr with our clients to find the answers”
The experts at the Multilingual Guidance Service have been able to assist clients in Vantaa with a wide range of issues. Ulla Kärki, an integration specialist working at the service, says that the work is particularly rewarding when she is able to help a client take control of their own affairs.
“We help with a wide range of matters, from registering a baby’s name to providing guidance on applying for a pension. If we don’t have immediate answers to a variety of questions, we look for them together with the client, for example by phoning the relevant authorities,” says Kärki.
She continues, “People are often pleasantly surprised to find they can actually sort something out in Finnish – we speak and understand simple Finnish here. Of course, we’ll bring in an interpreter if necessary.”
According to experts, it’s worth making use of multilingual guidance services without hesitation, even if your question seems trivial.
Information and support in your own language to navigate independently
We help clients find the right services and understand how Finnish society works, either in their own language or in clear Finnish. The aim is to ensure that clients receive reliable information and are able to manage their affairs independently.
“When people receive information in a language they understand, it is much easier for them to make decisions and manage their own affairs,” says integration expert Ziaulhag Momeni.
According to the guidance centre staff, the most frequently asked questions relate to language courses, applying for benefits, housing issues, employment and studying, applying for a nursery place, and procedures relating to residence permits.
"Many people leave the meeting with a clear plan"
“It’s surprising just how much even a small amount of accurate information can help a customer’s situation. Many people come to the information session feeling uncertain or worried, but leave the meeting with a clear plan,” says Momeni with a smile.
What has particularly stayed in Momeni’s mind from his client meetings?
“I particularly remember situations where a client returns later to say that they have found a job or a place to study thanks to the advice they received. That’s when you can really see the tangible impact of the advice,” he explains.
According to the experts, it’s worth coming to the multilingual advice service without hesitation, even if your question seems minor. The aim is to help you find the right information and the right services as early as possible. What message do Kärki and Momeni want to send to encourage people to come along to the information session?
“You don’t need to know where to start. Come and ask us, and we’ll find solutions together,” they say, nodding in agreement.
When you have questions in life, you don’t have to deal with them on your own.
