Food control

The Environment Centre of Vantaa controls the safety and health-related quality of food as well as compliance with food regulations.

Introduction

The purpose of food control is to protect consumers from health hazards caused by food. Food control also aims to support the operating conditions of food businesses. The control covers the entire supply chain from primary production to consumption.

The municipality's food and health inspectors and veterinarians are responsible for the control of food premises and facilities.

Food control applies to food and its production, transport, storage, sale, serving, import and export as well as labell
ing.

Food control also includes the investigation of food-related complaints and suspected food poisoning incidents, the processing of notifications and applications related to food business operations and advising residents and businesses in Vantaa on food-related matters.

Annual control fee

With the entry into force of the Food Act on 21 April 2021, the objects of control are charged a basic control fee of EUR 150 each year. The municipality began charging the fee on 1 January 2022. In addition, the objects of control will continue to be charged for the inspections according to the rates approved by the municipalities. The control fee is not levied on registered primary production sites, village shops, non-profit organisations or operators engaged in small-scale activities in accordance with national provisions adopted pursuant to EU law.

Further information on the annual fee under the Food Act and the amendment of the Act can be found on the websites of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Finnish Food Authority.
