Notification of food business activities

You must notify the authorities is you start or close a food business. A notification must also be filed if you make significant changes to your food business activities or the business operator changes.

Introduction

When you open your food premises, you must file a notification with the Vantaa Environment Centre. The obligation to notify applies to restaurants, cafés, shops, kiosks, grocery shops, bakeries and mobile food establishments, as well as other food production, sales and storage operators.

A notification must also be filed if the entrepreneur changes or the activities change substantially. Substantial changes include increasing the range of foods prepared, adding customer seats, expanding the pre
mises or making alterations to the HVAC equipment of the premises.

The notification will be processed at the Environment Centre and a certificate of the processing will be sent to the operator.

Notifiable food business activities

Notification

To register their activities, food business operators must submit a written notification four weeks prior to opening a food business or making significant changes to an existing food business.

The Vantaa Environment Centre must also be notified of the suspension or termination of operations without delay. The operator must also file a notification if the company’s name or business ID changes.

Mobile food establishments, virtual establishments and food establishments that only transport or store food in one or more transport vehicles or containers must submit a notification to the authorities of their domicile (municipality).

If the operator doesn’t have a domicile in Finland, the notification will be processed in the municipality where the food operations commence.
