Introduction

Mediation in criminal and civil cases is a free and statutory service for all citizens. It provides the parties involved in a criminal or civil case with an opportunity to meet confidentially in the presence of impartIal mediators. 

Mediation provides the opportunity to discuss the mental and material harm caused to the victim by the crime. The goal is to help the parties find mutually satisfying solutions and means to compensate for any harm caused by the events. 


Mediation advisors as
sess each case and organize mediation process step by step. Voluntary mediators carry out mediation meetings.


Vantaa Mediation Office arranges mediation services in Askola, Hyvinkää, Järvenpää, Kerava, Lapinjärvi, Loviisa, Myrskylä, Mäntsälä, Nurmijärvi, Pornainen, Porvoo, Pukkila, Sipoo, Tuusula and Vantaa. Meeting rooms for mediation are available in all municipalities. 

Mediation in criminal and civil matters is based on the Act on Conciliation in Criminal and Certain Civil Cases (1015/2005).

Prerequisites

The parties involved in a criminal or civil case, a guardian of a minor, the police or prosecutor and other authorities can submit a mediation request to the mediation office. In domestic violence cases, only the police or prosecutor can initiate mediation. The mediation office will assess whether the case is suitable for mediation with the parties involved.
