Did you know that Vantaa has been mediating crimes and disputes for 40 years? Are you involved in a dispute that you would like resolved?

Pöydän ympärillä neljä aikuista keskustelemassa.

Crime and dispute mediation is a free service where the parties meet to discuss their issue in a safe atmosphere. Two impartial and trained volunteer mediators will always be present during these meetings. The service is organized by the professional personnel of the mediation office.

Most mediation initiatives come from the police. However, mediation can be initiated by anyone. The most common cases for mediation are assault or criminal damage. A mediation initiative made by a citizen may, for example, concern a neighbour dispute that is not appropriate to resolve through a criminal procedure. Disputes may also include cases such as school bullying and pet-related matters.

Mediation can result in an apology, monetary compensation or compensation for damages through work. In cases of domestic violence, mediation can only be initiated by the police or prosecutor.

Mediation work feels rewarding

Wanting to volunteer in mediation may sometimes raise eyebrows. However, those who work as mediators describe the task as rewarding and consider the mediation community very important:

“Mediation allows me to help people to find solutions to their disputes, while I get to experience the joy of resolution.”

“I am proud of the challenging and socially remarkable volunteer work that I do.”

“Volunteer work such as this has many challenges, but also many opportunities to improve yourself. The mediation office offers us high-quality training sessions that also help us with our lives in general.”

The mediation office recruits and trains its mediators. The next opportunity for basic training will be held next year.

Can mediation help your situation?

If you are wondering whether your conflict could be mediated, feel free to contact the mediation office. Sometimes simply talking about your situation can help to de-escalate it. Note that the mediation office is impartial and does not act as an agent for any party. You can find the contact details for the mediation office at vantaa.fi/mediation.
