The Jumbo library needs assessment left on the City Council's table

News

The City Council decided in its meeting on October 6th to leave the Jumbo Library needs assessment on the table until the next meeting. The next City Council meeting is on October 20th, 2025.

This updated news article tells about the need for the Point Library in Kartanonkoski to obtain larger premises in the Jumbo shopping center (Flamingo wing), as well as the reasons for the library's move and other preparations.

The present address of Point library is Hagelstamintie 1, which is in Kartanonkoski. On the same premises, there are also International School of Vantaa and a daycare center. Jumbo Shopping Centre is situated right next to Kartanonkoski, address: Vantaanportinkatu 3.

At the resident event on March 3, residents had the opportunity to talk about their concerns related to the move. The event also talked about the preliminary schedule for the library move and about the possibility for the residents to participate in planning the new library. In addition to Deputy Mayor Riikka Åstrand and Cultural Services Director Annukka Larkio, representatives of the library and school also took part in the discussion.

Library services’ situation in the Aviapolis major region

The only library in the Aviapolis major region is connected to Point school, where the small, approximately 800 m2 premises have posed a challenge.

The city has been offered a space of 1400 m2 in Jumbo, where the shopping center’s customers especially wish to have a library.

The Aviapolis service-network plan includes two libraries for the area. Thanks to the move, the founding of the second library could be postponed from 2030 to 2040, by which point money would be saved from the costs of the original plan.

Point library’s former premises would be necessary for the school, as the number of students attending the international school is increasing, particularly for students of lower secondary school age.

The library move is necessary for these reasons

In 2024, Point library was the third busiest library in Vantaa in terms of borrowing and returning.

Plenty of schoolchildren spend their afternoons in the library, and the library cannot offer them enough supervision or activities. The library and staff must serve all residents of the Aviapolis area equally. The city is looking into the possibility of organizing supervised activities for schoolchildren in the afternoons.

Point’s premises are now too small, and this makes the library’s daily operations harder. The library does not have the quiet space that customers wish for, nor a proper space for group activities or events.

Due to the large windows and lack of cooling, the library’s premises are too hot from early spring to late fall.

The new premises can be specifically designed to suit the library’s operations.

The larger space makes having a reading room and multi-facility premises in the library possible.

In addition, more books can be placed in the library and there can be more space for both adults and children to hang out.

Jumbo library will also be getting a sorting check-in machine, which will help in handling the large number of returned materials.

Jumbo Shopping Centre is significantly more accessible by public transport connections than the Point building. For drivers, there is plenty of space to park.

In Jumbo’s customer survey, a library was the most wanted service in everyday life, and situating a library specifically in Jumbo was desired.

In Jumbo, a visit to the library is easy to combine with other everyday trips to the shops.

Other libraries that have moved to shopping centers (such as the libraries of Koivukylä and Espoo) have seen an increase in the number of visitors. The share of children’s borrowing, in particular, has grown.

Jumbo library would serve the entire Aviapolis area at a more central location and attract more customers from around Vantaa, as a large number of visits to Jumbo come from everyday errands within Vantaa.

On the other hand, Jumbo library would also act as a showcase of Vantaa and its services for the shopping center’s millions of visitors coming from other municipalities.

Jumbo library’s vision

  • The operations will be developed into an easily approachable shared space, where everyone feels welcome.
  • An oasis among commercial services: the library is a place for calming down, spending time peacefully, learning and engaging in hobbies.
  • In Jumbo, a visit to the library is easy to combine with other everyday errands.
  • The library is a great showcase of Vantaa and its services.

Jumbo library is planned together

The library’s activities and interior decoration are being planned together with the area’s residents.

It is important that the library reflects its visitors.

Once the city’s official decisions regarding the library move are complete, we will invite residents to participate in planning.

Schedule of the move

The City Council decided in its meeting on October 6th to leave the Jumbo Library needs assessment on the table until the next meeting. The next City Council meeting is on October 20th, 2025.
