City Council handled the 2024-2025 environmental liability report — Vantaa's environmental liability work has progressed well

Release

Vantaa City Council assembled for its first council term meeting on August 25. The meeting approved local detailed plans for Vantaa light rail in Länsimäki, Vaarala and Rajakylä, and entered the City of Vantaa’s environmental report 2024-2025 for information.

Vantaa light rail’s local detailed plan and alteration to it are used to prepare for Vantaa light rail by designating sufficient space for different modes of transport and the street environment, as well as for functions related to the light rail in Länsimäki, Vaarala, Rajakylä, and Länsimäentie. In addition, the meeting ratified the local detailed plan for the future maintenance building in Viinikkala.

According to the environmental liability report, Vantaa’s environmental work has progressed well during the past year. In 2024, Vantaa’s greenhouse gas emissions dropped by eight percent. Retaining biodiversity in the middle of climate change poses an essential challenge to the city. Vantaa's cornerstones as regards cherishing biodiversity consist of the city's ecological network and nature reserves. Vantaa wants to be a nature-positive city, which means that weakening the state of nature is stopped and turned into recovery. An important tool here is the model of non-weakening nature that was adopted in Vantaa at the beginning of 2025. Vantaa was the very first city in Finland to adopt the practice.

In addition, the meeting discussed answers to the initiatives submitted by the city councilors.
