Preparing for a strike in Vantaa on Wednesday 22.11. - swimming pools closed, among other things
The Union of Public and Welfare Employees JHL has announced political strike action in Uusimaa on Wednesday 22.11. In Vantaa, a large part of the city's sports facilities will be closed for this reason. There will be a delay in ploughing the streets.
This release will be updated as the strike day progresses.
The Union of Public and Welfare Sectors JHL has announced that the strike on 22 November will cover work in Vantaa's Urban Environment Division and the Sports Service Area of the Urban Culture and Welfare Division. According to the JHL's announcement, the political industrial action also applies to Vantaa's facilities services Vantti Oy.
Impact on urban culture and well-being services
The strike will cause extensive closures of sports services in Vantaa. Swimming pools and gyms in connection with swimming pools, ice rinks, artificial ice rinks, Lumo sports facilities (including classrooms managed by the sports services), the Rajatorppa rock shelter sports facility, sports halls and other sports facilities that require staff to be open will be closed on Wednesday. Allowances for the use of these facilities have been cancelled.
The sports facilities at the Koivukylä senior citizens' centre, the Hakunila rock shelter, the Rajakylä tennis centre and the Hämeenkylä sports hall will be open in accordance with the opening times allocated.
In addition, the free-time opening hours for schools, educational establishments and day-care centres are valid in those facilities where self-monitoring is applied. This refers to schools and day nurseries where users are given a key and there is no evening manager. On the other hand, shifts in schools, educational establishments and crèches subject to evening supervision may be cancelled.
Guided group exercise for working-age and senior citizens organised by the Sports Service has also been cancelled on 22 November.
Potential impacts in the urban environment sector
In the urban environment sector, the strike may have an impact on street maintenance and the opening hours of the landfill site.
In the major areas of Myyrmäki, Tikkurila, Kivistö and Aviapolis, streets are being ploughed by the city's maintenance department, and there may be a delay in ploughing in these areas on Wednesday if snowfall arrives in Vantaa during the evening as forecast. Street maintenance in these areas will focus on main roads and public transport routes, and residential streets should not be plowed until the end of the day.
In the Hakunila, Korso and Koivukylä areas of Vantaa, the ploughing is carried out by private contractors who have been put out to tender, so the strike will not affect these areas. The landfill site in Petiko, Vantaa may operate with reduced opening hours or be closed.
