I am considering studies

If you are an unemployed jobseeker, it is important for you to agree on any studies with your employment expert before applying for a study place.

Contact your employment expert

By logging in to the Job Market Finland E-services, you can contact your employment expert easily. In the context of contacting the expert, you can provide a brief description of your situation and any questions you would like answered.

The employment expert will help you work on your goals and plans. If necessary, the expert will refer you to career coaching, for example. The employment expert can advise you on how the studies will affect your unemployment benefits.

What could I study?

An education trial provides you with the opportunity to introduce yourself to practical studies. In addition to qualification studies, you can develop your competence through labour market training, for example. The Studyinfo website provides information on a comprehensive range of education.

How do I apply for studies?

The joint application process is arranged twice a year. It provides you with the opportunity to apply for higher education institutions and upper secondary education. You can also apply for upper secondary studies throughout the year via the rolling admission process or by means of an apprenticeship agreement. Many educational institutions provide adult education, for which you can apply directly through the website of each institution. If you are admitted to studies, please remember to confirm your place within the deadline so that you do not lose it.

How can I fund my studies?

You may be entitled to employment security during your studies under certain conditions. Before you begin your studies, an employment expert will assess whether or not you meet the requirements for unemployment security. Contact your employment expert as early on as possible.

If you are an unemployed jobseeker, please remember to report all of your beginning studies to the employment expert. You must also report your studies when you are not receiving financial aid for students.

Jos olet työtön työnhakija, muistathan ilmoittaa kaikista alkavista opinnoistasi työllisyysasiantuntijallesi. Ilmoita opiskelusta myös silloin, kun et saa opintotukea.

Apprenticeship training combines work and studies.

Do you want to study, work and get paid? An apprenticeship is a fixed-term employment contract during which you study practical work tasks in a workplace. The training that takes place in the workplace are often supplemented with studies at an educational institution or online learning environment.

The obligation of a person under 25 to gain an education

Are you are under the age of 25 and do not yet have an qualification or degree? Your right to unemployment security is limited, because persons under the age of 25 are primarily expected to study for a qualification or degree. The studies of persons under 25 are mainly funded through the student financial aid.

If you are an unemployment job seeker who does not have a vocational qualification or higher education degree, you must apply for studies. The employment services will monitor your applications until you turn 25 or complete a vocational qualification. The matriculation examination is not regarded as a vocational qualification. Apply for at least two education programmes that begin in the fall and lead to a qualification or degree.

The studies do not need to be covered by the joint application process. If you are invited to an entrance exam, you have the obligation to participate. If you are admitted to studies, you must begin the studies on the designated start date.

An employment obligation may be imposed on you if

  • you do not apply for studies,
  • your refuse a study place,
  • or you discontinue your studies.

Discontinuation of studies

If you have already discontinued your studies, you must immediately register as a client of employment services. If you are already a jobseeker client, report the interruption of your studies through Job Market Finland’s E-services. The employment services provide assistance for career planning and job seeking. You can take part in career coaching or guidance for choosing a profession, or gain tips for updating your job seeking documents and finding suitable jobs.

Transition security training

If you have turned 55 years of age and you are dismissed from your job, you are entitled to transition security training. The purpose of the training is to improve your professional expertise and support your employment. The training will last no more than six months.

Transition security is helpful if your employer is forced to dismiss employees for production-related and financial reasons. The service provides quick access to support for job seeking and finding new employment. Upon your dismissal, the transition security expert of the employment area cooperates with your employer and employee representatives.

You have the right to gain an employment plan even during your period of notice. The employment plan agrees upon the measures and services that will best promote your employment. As a person dismissed from your job, you are entitled to paid leave when you prepare an employment plan or participate in the job seeking coaching, labour market training or outplacement coaching.
