This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Ring Rail Line. The tracks connect the city and build the future, says Tero Anttila, Deputy Mayor for Urban Environment, in the editorial of the residents' magazine.

Opened ten years ago, the Ring Rail Line has permanently changed Vantaa. Not only has it made getting around easier, it has also steered the city's growth in new directions and demonstrated the significant role that rail transport plays in Vantaa's vitality.

The stations built along the Ring Rail Line – Vehkala, Kivistö, Aviapolis, Airport and Leinelä – have given rise to active residential and employment areas around them. Although the change is most evident in new neighbourhoods such as Leinelä and Kivistö,
the impact of the Ring Rail Line also extends to older centres. The area around Tikkurila station has undergone a transformation, the centre of Myyrmäki has been renovated, and access to the airport is now smoother. Aviapolis has grown to become Finland's second largest employment area.

The development of railways does not stop at the Ring Rail Line. The Vantaa tram will continue and reinforce this change. Like the Ring Rail Line, it will connect different parts of the city and bring the benefits of rail transport to eastern Vantaa. Rail transport also supports Vantaa's environmental goals. It reduces traffic emissions, promotes carbon neutrality and streamlines commuter traffic. The tram will increase the city's attractiveness in the eyes of both residents and businesses.

Although the investments are substantial, they will pay for themselves in the long term. It is important to remember that the effects of rail transport projects are very long-lasting: for example, the stations of the London Underground, built in the 19th century, are still in use. The tram is not just a 19-kilometre rail project, but a step towards a cohesive, vibrant and sustainable city.

Railways build the future – they bring life and appeal well into the 21st century. With the Ring Rail Line and the tram, Vantaa is moving towards a smart and sustainable future on rails.
