Noise intensive drilling, excavation and deep compaction works to begin in June at the Vaarala depot
At the Vaarala depot, rock drilling, excavation and deep compaction works will begin in June. The works will cause significant noise in the area. The works will start in week 25.
Work phases and schedule:
- Drilling, rock excavation and channel excavation: June – September 2026
- Deep compaction: June – September 2026
Deep compaction is the strengthening of soil without excavation or separate reinforcement structures, in order to increase its load‑bearing capacity. Deep compaction—more specifically dynamic (drop) compaction—is carried out using a heavy weight that is repeatedly dropped onto the ground, causing the soil to densify.
Channel excavation refers to excavation carried out in a long excavation trench.
The approximate locations of drilling, excavation and deep compaction are shown in the attached map.
Noise‑intensive drilling and excavation works are carried out on weekdays between 7:00 and 18:00.
Impact of blasting on traffic
During blasting, traffic on Länsimäentie may be temporarily stopped for safety reasons. Traffic interruptions will last no longer than 8 minutes. Before each blast, an audible warning signal will be given in the area.
Vibration monitoring
Vibrations caused by the works are monitored on site by a consultant specializing in blasting operations. Vibration meters will be installed in nearby areas at locations determined by the consultant. Owners or operators of these properties have been contacted separately regarding the installation of the meters.
We encourage people moving in the area to allow extra time for travel. If particularly disturbing indoor noise occurs in nearby properties, you can send a message to ratikka@vantaa.fi. Hearing protection can be provided if necessary.
