Preparing for Asphalt Paving and New Traffic Arrangements on Hakunilantie
Construction on Hakunilantie is progressing into a highly visible phase this autumn as work moves from kerb and stone installation to asphalt paving. Once paving is completed, traffic will be transferred to the new traffic lanes, and construction will continue on the western side of the street with the tramway.
Preparing for Asphalt Paving on Hakunilantie
As autumn begins, kerb installation on Hakunilantie has progressed well. The structural layers of the carriageways and the pedestrian and cycling route have been completed, and the surfaces have been graded and levelled in preparation for asphalt paving.
Paving is scheduled to begin in week 38. At this stage, the lower asphalt layers will be laid, while the final wearing course will be installed in 2027. This approach allows larger areas to be paved at once and helps ensure the highest quality surface without unnecessary construction joints.
Before paving begins, the remaining stonework will be completed, including the installation of the final kerbs and the concrete block paving sections along the street. A new section of street and shared pedestrian and cycling route extending several hundred metres north from Hevoshaantie will be completed.
Traffic to Shift to New Lanes, Tramway Construction to Begin
Once the paving works have been completed, new traffic arrangements will be introduced along this section of Hakunilantie. Vehicle traffic will be transferred to its final traffic lanes. Following the traffic switch, construction activities will move to the western side of the street, where demolition of the existing surface structures and excavation works will begin. Tramway construction is scheduled to start in October and will proceed in stages, from the construction of the track foundation layers through to rail installation.
