Municipal Infrastructure and Foundations Under Construction at the Vaarala Depot, Pedestrian and Cycling Connections Reopened
Rock excavation and crushing works at the Vaarala depot have been completed, and construction has now progressed to municipal infrastructure and depot structure works. The pedestrian and cycling connection via Lemmenkuja has been reopened following the completion of construction works, and temporary traffic arrangements on Länsimäentie are also being reduced.
Construction Progressing at the Depot Area
Crushing and rock excavation works at the Vaarala depot have been completed. In the southern part of the depot area, water supply and sewer lines, groundwater protection structures, and drainage systems are currently being constructed, along with earth filling works. In addition, grounding systems for power supply poles as well as cable ducts, chambers, and conduits are being installed.
In the northern part of the depot area, wedge foundation preparation works for the maintenance building are underway. These works are being carried out to prepare the foundations for future construction.
Finishing Works at Lemmenkuja
Asphalt paving and the installation of lighting poles at Lemmenkuja have been completed. Testing and CCTV inspections of the stormwater sewer and water supply pipelines have also been carried out to ensure the tightness, functionality, and quality of the infrastructure before commissioning. In addition, plate load tests have been conducted to verify the bearing capacity of the constructed subgrade and its suitability for the final pavement structure.
Restoration works are currently underway along the street section.
The temporary traffic arrangements have been removed, and the pedestrian and cycling route has been restored to normal use.
Improved Access on Länsimäentie
Works on the section of Länsimäentie adjacent to the depot area have also progressed as planned. The widening and paving of the junction have been completed, and paving works have also been carried out on the pedestrian and cycling path.
Modifications to the temporary traffic arrangements will be completed during this week. Under the new arrangements, the pedestrian and cycling route alongside the depot area will largely be reopened for public use. Only a short section, measuring a few dozen metres at the northern end of Länsimäentie, will remain reserved for construction activities. Lighting along the route will, at this stage, be provided through temporary solutions.
Municipal Infrastructure Connections and Foundation Works
Works in the area will continue over the coming weeks. During weeks 43-44, municipal infrastructure connection works will be carried out, during which the new utility networks will be connected to the existing systems. Foundation footing construction will also begin in the area.
