Demolition of pedestrian and cycling bridges over Länsimäentie begins in May – work carried out at night
Länsimäentie will be widened at the bridge locations, and the current bridges will not fit within the future road section. Therefore, the pedestrian and cycling bridges on Länsimäentie will be demolished, and pedestrian traffic will be redirected to cross Länsimäentie via a signal-controlled crossing. Preparatory work will begin in week 20.
Preparations for demolishing the Juoksuhaudanpuisto bridge and the trail bridge will begin in May starting from week 20. Before demolishing the Juoksuhaudanpuisto bridge near Länsimäentie school, a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing will be constructed nearby. This crossing will be completed before demolition to ensure a safe and clear route for schoolchildren.
Demolition of both bridges will take place during the night between Sunday and Monday, 17–18 May 2026, when traffic volumes are at their lowest. During the demolition, all traffic on Länsimäentie will be closed for 12 hours from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM. During this time, vehicle traffic will be diverted via Rajakyläntie to the Keihästie intersection, with clear signage for detours. Pedestrian and cycling routes will be redirected further away from the work site for safety reasons. During the closure, the pedestrian crossing at Rajakentäntie intersection and the underpass at the Maratontie roundabout will remain in normal use.
Public transport will operate on exceptional routes during the closure. Buses will run via Rajakyläntie to Maratontie using alternative vehicles. Normal traffic, including morning bus services, will resume on Monday morning. For more information, see HSL’s announcement.
The demolition work will cause increased noise in the area during the night of 17–18 May 2026 from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM. The work site will be clearly marked and secured to ensure safety for all road users and workers. We recommend allowing extra time for travel in the area and observing reduced speed limits.
