New map signs coming to Tikkurila city centre
New wayfinding signs will be installed in Tikkurila city centre this autumn to make it easier to find services and pedestrian routes during the construction of the Vantaa tramway. The signs have been developed together with local residents and businesses.
Construction of the tramway and other ongoing construction works continue to affect the everyday lives of citizens and routes for several years to come. For this reason, the City of Vantaa is developing new ways to help people move around and access information during the construction period.
Tram communications are being developed based on feedback from residents and businesses
The development work is based on suggestions gathered through a resident survey on tramway communications conducted earlier this spring.
The survey was carried out in Tikkurila and Hakunila and received responses from nearly 400 residents. You can read more about the survey in a related news article on vantaa.fi.
Respondents expressed a wish for more up-to-date information about the local impacts of construction works, particularly changes to routes. They also requested improved maps and wayfinding signs as well as easier access to current information.

Based on this feedback, local construction web pages have been made clearer and easier to use. Information signs directing people to local updates have also been installed at construction sites. The city has now decided to introduce new map signs in Tikkurila city centre to help people find services and routes during construction.
The new map sign was developed together with residents and businesses
In August, the City of Vantaa organised a user testing session for the new map sign in Tikkurila city centre. Residents and businesses were invited to participate, and local companies were also able to contribute through an online survey.
During user testing, residents were able to try the new map sign and provide feedback on the draft version.
Participants were invited to comment on the map’s readability, ease of understanding and the proposed location of the sign. Feedback was collected from altogether approximately 20 residents and business representatives.
Among the residents who responded to the feedback survey, 86% considered the map sign useful. The map’s clarity and its ability to help people find services and routes received particularly positive feedback.
Eighty-six per cent of residents who responded to the survey considered the map sign useful. The clearest need for further development related to route navigation.
The most common suggestions for improvement focused on readability, including a larger map, larger text and stronger colour contrast. Respondents also called for more detailed route information, particularly from an accessibility perspective. In addition, many felt that the sign should be placed where it is highly visible to people passing through the area.
The map signs will be further refined based on the feedback received. The aim is to install the signs in Tikkurila city centre in September. A digital version of the map is also being planned.
