The economy stimulated discussion in the City Council meeting

Release

Vantaa City Council ratified on May 10, the city's financial statement and entered the 2020 evaluation report for information. The city councilors also had a lively discussion of the economy over the next few years.

Vantaa had a good financial result in 2020. Compared with the year before, the result for period improved by €117.8 million and amounted to €55.1 million. In addition, Vantaa managed to decrease its loans by €48.6 million. The state-provided coronavirus subsidy greatly affected the city's result, and the negative impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on the economy were smaller than feared.

Nevertheless, wellbeing-promoting goals remained unrealized due to the coronavirus crisis. The health care and social welfare services are burdened with care and service backlog, which must be attended to in the coming years.

Striving at carbon-neutral Vantaa by 2030

The city council entered the 2020-2021 environmental liability report for information. Vantaa’s goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

Vantaa’s greenhouse gas emissions have slightly decreased every year since 2010, and this trend continues. Three quarters of the greenhouse gas emissions originate from energy production and energy consumption, including traffic. In 2019, Vantaa’s emissions fell the most of all the metropolitan area municipalities, which was mostly due to Vantaa Energy Ltd's decision to adopt more extensive use of biofuels in producing district heating, which significantly reduced the use of coal and natural gas.

The city council also entered the sustainable energy and climate action plan for 2021 for information.

Vantaa is committed to being a carbon-neutral city in 2030. This entails that Vantaa must reduce its greenhouse gas emission 80% compared to year 1990 emissions and compensate for the remaining emissions, for example, by increasing carbon sinks or by financing low-carbon projects elsewhere. At the moment, Vantaa is reducing its emissions as planned.
